Beautiful Birthstones…and what they say about you!

August 16, 2017

A variety of Birthstones and what they mean, the ideal decorations for bespoke jewelry.

As you might have guessed, I have a certain “gra” for gemstones.  As a jewellery designer, I suppose it doesn’t really come as a surprise!  They have always intrigued me and love to use them in my work, particularly in my Children of Lir and Gossamer Collections and most recently in my new gemstone stacking rings!

With a history centuries long, there is so much to talk about when it comes to gemstones, I could write a series.  For now, I’ll stick with Birthstones and what they say about you!

January: Garnet (Aquarius Zodiac Sign)

The garnet gemstone is known to be dark red in colour, but it comes in colours of greens, yellows and oranges too!  They are known to provide protection and guidance to the wearer.  What you mightn’t know is that it’s also a traditional second wedding anniversary gift!  I might do another blog post on this, so if you’re interested, let me know here or on Facebook!

February: Amethyst (Pisces Zodiac Sign)

The amethyst is a purple stone.  With many different shades to choose from, it’s a colour that I love to use in my pieces!  The stone brings peace and serenity to its wearer, enabling them to have a balanced mind-set.

March: Aquamarine (Aries Zodiac Sign)

The Aquamarine comes from the same family as the emerald!  The stone ranges in colour from pale to deep shades of blue.  It is thought to attribute to good health, love, hope and youthfulness.  They remind me of the calmness of the sea too!

April: Diamond (Taurus Zodiac Sign)

A diamond is one of the more well-known birthstones and the colour depends on the impurities present in the stone.  It is known to be a symbol of eternal love and courage.  It actually came from the Greek word “adamas” meaning invincible!

May: Emerald (Gemini Zodiac Sign)

Emerald’s are a rich green colour, hence why Ireland is called the Emerald Isle! They bring their wear good health and fortune!

Gossamer pearl bracelet, the birthstone for the month of June.

June: Pearls, Alexandrite and Moonstone (Cancer Zodiac Sign)

Pearls are a popular stone in jewellery design because they are so beautiful!  They are also associated with chasity and modesty!  The Alexandrite is one of the most valuable gems, known for its ability to change colour!  Moonstones come in a range of colours. It was thought that its shimmery appearance shifted with the phases of the moon, so it was perfectly named!
